620 held for smuggling ration rice, essentials

Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies CID arrested 620 people in the past one year for smuggling rice and other essential items meant for distribution through ration shops.

In special drives organised by the team along with Public Distribution System (PDS) officials, they seized 361 tonnes of rice, 181 LPG cylinders, 1.1 tonnes of wheat, 1.7 tonnes of toor dal, 2,140 litres of kerosene and 36 palm oil packets from the accused, said an official release.

As many as 190 vehicles involved in these smuggling cases were seized. Public can file smuggling complaints by calling 1800 599 5950.
