Cut rice price, Centre tells millers’ outfits

Amid rising price of non-basmati rice despite good crop and high availability, Centre on Monday directed the industry associations to ensure the cereal is available at reduced retail price with immediate effect. It also cautioned that any efforts at profiteering will be dealt with “strictly”. Taking note of how there is a wide gap between the MRP and actual retail price, the food and consumer affairs ministry has suggested the industry bring prices down to a realistic level to safeguard the consumers’ interest.
In a release, the ministry said that Union food secretary Sanjeev Chopra held a meeting with leading rice processing industry representatives to review the domestic price scenario of non-basmati rice.
