Rice prices (Bangladesh): Mill owners blame wholesalers, retailers

Some wholesalers and retailers are purchasing rice at low prices but selling it at high prices, claimed three groups of mill owners and Rice-Paddy Association.

The high price of paddy drove up rice prices, the three organisations said in a joint statement at a media conference on Friday (Jan 26) in Chapainawabganj.

They said the price of paddy decreased when mill owners collectively refrained from purchasing it, despite an increase in production costs.

“Rice mill owners have responded to the government’s call by reducing prices,” they said in a prepared statement.

District Rice Mill Owner Group’s Vice-President Anwar Hossain highlighted the reputation of the rice traders in the district and their history of supplying rice across the country.

He emphasised the cooperative business relationship with the government, acknowledging the natural fluctuations in rice prices throughout the year.

He also revealed that the district rice mill owners have already engaged in discussions with the district administration to maintain stability in the market.
