Tamil Nadu: Man held with 1,200kg of rice at Tambaram rly stn

A man was arrested with 1,200kg of ration rice that was being smuggled to Odisha by police at Tambaram railway station on Wednesday.

The accused Biswananda Reddy, 29, is a native of Odisha. A police team grew suspicious when they noticed him carrying five gunny bags.Police said Reddy purchased ration rice from TN fair price shops at subsidised rates and smuggled it to Odisha to sell at higher prices. He planned to transport the bags of rice via Santragachi Express.

The accused came to Chennai five years ago in search of a job and ended up smuggling PDS rice as it earned him a good profit, police said.Police registered a case against him, He was produced before the Tambaram court and remanded in judicial custody.

This is not Reddy’s first offence; he was previously arrested at Nungambakkam railway station for rice smuggling and was jailed under the Goondas Act.
