Centre clears Rs 797 crore green hydrogen jetty project at Paradip Port to boost clean energy logistics

The Centre has approved a ₹797.17 crore project to develop a dedicated green hydrogen jetty with allied infrastructure at Paradip Port Authority, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s clean energy logistics network.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) cleared the project, which will be implemented on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. The proposed facility will have a handling capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and will cater to green hydrogen, ammonia and other liquid cargo.

According to the Ministry, the new infrastructure will include a dedicated jetty, storage systems, pipelines, cargo handling equipment and other associated facilities. The jetty will feature a centre-to-centre distance of 279 metres between extreme end dolphins and a dredged depth of 14.3 metres in front of the berth to enable safe handling of liquid cargo vessels.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the approval underscores the Centre’s push to build future-ready green infrastructure under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said the initiative aligns with the government’s broader clean energy ambitions and will help transform ports into hubs of sustainable growth and innovation. Sonowal added that the Paradip project would strengthen export logistics and integrate Odisha’s emerging green hydrogen production clusters with global markets.

Paradip Port Authority will extend capital support equivalent to 20 per cent of the project cost – ₹159.43 crore – during the construction phase. The project is expected to be completed within 24 months.

The facility will also include provisions to handle other liquid cargo to ensure optimal utilisation in the early years of the green hydrogen sector’s expansion and to diversify the port’s cargo profile.

The Ministry said the project is aligned with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and is expected to boost investments in green energy infrastructure in Odisha while enhancing port-based logistics for clean energy commodities. The jetty will incorporate specialised infrastructure and advanced safety systems for handling and storing green energy derivatives, supporting the development of an integrated green hydrogen ecosystem around Paradip Port.
